well dont you worry, darl. i was exactly the same when i joined deviant art. its alot to take in at first.. but baby steps will help, dont worry.

and yes you did reply.

the messages - which is the most important for now, is located next to your name underneath the DEVIANTART logo at the top left of the page.. you will see "ismahairight" followed by "logout" followed by your messages. just click those links..
D means its deviations of people you watch that have recently been uploaded. [if you have that] M is just messages such as someone watching you, someone faving your work, or perhaps a site wide interest article... i normally just delete those unless it shows changes in the site. C means you have comments.. and J means the people you watch have made a journal.. or.. two.. or three. lol..

as for watching people, all you have to do is click on "Watch this deviant" on someones userpage.. and whallaaah! you are watching them.

dont read too much into what i've written, there are no secret passages in what i've said, honey. i hope that helps you. and yeah you did reply to me so dont worry. you've done very well.

I am still confused as to how to add people as friends or reply to comments, I have no idea if you will get this or not, and I still have trouble locating my messages, plus, I dont really think my photography is all that good.
